TITLE:

Communication, Leadership and Team Management – Soft Skills in Project Management.

THEME:

Soft skills in project management

Soft skills include leadership, team building and communication skills, as well as a wide variety of other interpersonal strengths. Delegates will take part in a discussion to highlight the most important of these in project and programme management, as well as considering the benefits, costs and risks of putting in place development programmes to enable staff to enhance their skills in this area.

The different approaches to developing these skills will be considered, including the different schools of thought (cognitive versus behavioural) and the different methods of delivering these skills, including the current popularity for coaching and mentoring services.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The issues around leadership, communication and teamwork come up frequently. This one day workshop will review the meaning of soft skills and how these apply to the challenges faced during a typical project or programme. This includes a review of the assumptions that methodologies including PRINCE2, MSP and MOR have made regarding the experience of those undertaking key roles in soft skills.

The day will conclude with a review of how the move towards this type of skills development in project and programme management may affect the way in which BPUG helps its members in future.

For up-to-date details please take a look at www.usergroup.org.uk/about/conference.php

Why come to a BPUG Conference?

Different topics to other conferences - good down to Earth practical case studies.

In a recent member survey, two-thirds of respondents cited knowledgeable speakers and practical workshop sessions as the most important benefits of attending.

In addition, members valued the good mix of topics, the opportunity to network with others, the ability to ask questions of experts and the opportunity for personal development.

What can I expect in 2008?

The programme is currently being put together, based on feedback from our members and our knowledge of key events

We are pleased to be able to announce that the keynote address will be given by Jonathan Shebioba - Director of Best Management Practice at OGC.

As Director of Best Management Practice, Jonathan provides executive control and sets the strategic direction for delivery of publishing and accreditation services in support of the OGC Portfolio of products which includes PRINCE2, MSP, M_o_R and ITIL. This includes ensuring their contracted partners, TSO and APMG, assist them in embedding good practices through appropriately maintaining, exploiting, promoting, promulgating, distributing and supporting the OGC Portfolio.

Current session topics:

  • PRINCE2: 2009 project update from Andy Murray of Outperform Ltd. Andy is the lead author for the forthcoming major release of PRINCE2.
  • P3O update from Sue Vowler, of Project Angels Ltd. This will have been launched shortly before the conference and for most people, the conference will be the ideal time to gain a better understanding of the guidance, who it is aimed at, what it includes and how it will affect us all.
  • We aim to include a practical session on the use of P3M3 - the maturity model. Rod Sowden, from Aspire Europe, will ensure that we have an interesting and informative session.
  • Other topics we intend to introduce include Benefits Realisation - a really hot topic right now and top of the list in our survey of requested topics.
  • You can also expect case studies, tailoring guidance, something on health checks (for projects rather than people!) and our ever-popular panel of experts who will offer their views on any question you put to them.
  • The conference programme will be supplemented with the AGM of BPUG (come along and learn more about us - and have your say in how we are run). There will be a dinner on the first evening. The hotel has Health, Fitness & Spa facilities, WiFi in the Main Hall, meeting and banqueting rooms and high speed internet access in all guest rooms - and its own helicopter pad in case you need one!

What are the booking options?

The basic price of attendance is £180+VAT per delegate, not including accommodation.* We also have some combined membership and conference packages available - go to the dedicated conference page for more details.

To take up one of the combined packages, please enter a comment in the booking form and we will get back to you.

* If you want to reserve a room at the hotel, please contact them direct. Payment will need to be made to the hotel, at £99+VAT per person per night. To book, please call Crewe Hall on 01270 259314 (Sue or Craig) or Central Reservations on 0845 0740060 and in either case quote Best Practice User Group.
